With an awesome display of speed and accuracy, Patrick Rafter proved he belongs as a U.S. Open champion. Rafter made just five unforced errors in the entire match, retaining his title Sunday by winning an all-Australian battle with Mark Philip-poussis 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. The third-seeded Rafter won the final 10 games as Philippoussis' usually overpowering serve became a liability. The unseeded Philippoussis had just five aces and 13 double faults, the last on the final point of way the whole tournament, very lucky to be here." Rafter, looking like a Samurai warrior with a pony tail and a mangy beard that he grew during the tournament, has a game tailor-made for the hard, fast courts and hard, fast balls of the U.S.
Open. Philippoussis, in his first Grand Slam final, stayed in the match by saving 13 of 14 break points until midway through the third set, but Rafter converted five of his six break points after that. Rafter faced just three break points in the match and lost his serve much wrong, except for a few double faults," Philippoussis said. "Pat hit a lot of passing shots, he made me volley from my shoetops. He was playing great tennis.
The guy's just quick." Rafter, who had to rally from a two-set deficit in the first round but never was threatened again in the tournament, won $700,000 and moved up to No. 2 in the world rankings just behind Sampras, whom he defeated Saturday in the semifinals. The match was tied at one set Rafter's victory gave the Open its second consecutive repeat champion. Pete Sampras won in 1995 and 19. "Now I feel that last year wasn't such a fluke.
Now I can look at people and say I've done it again," Rafter said. "Having the experience last year really helped me in this match. I was very relaxed out there. It was Aussie Rules tennis in the final, with both players diving to the concrete courts and sending volleys rocketing across the net. But Rafter had precision to go with his power.
Rafter took command. After holding serve, Rafter moved to break point on an incredible point when he raced around the court to return an overhead, a forehand into the corner and a drop shot. He broke Philippoussis' serve on the next point. Rafter then won the next eight games to close out the match. During changeovers, Rafter thought back to his five-set victory over Hicham Arazi in the first round.

Cone, bidding for his first 20-win season in 10 years, was stymied as Toronto rallied for a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees and moved within three games of Boston in the AL wild-card race. Toronto took three of four from the AL East champion Yankees, and with their 14th win in 16 games, the Blue Jays are as close to the Red Sox as they've been since May 30. New York, meanwhile, contin seven times in the seven rounds of the tournament. As Australian flags waved in the stands, Rafter captured his sixth title of the year and improved his record to 25-2 since Wimbledon.
Philippoussis was trying to join Andre Agassi as the only unseeded men's champion in U.S. Open history. Agassi pulled off the feat in 1994. "This is a start of something in my career. I'm only 21 years old.
I'm hoping and counting on having many more Sundays in Grand Slams," he said. "This is just a start for me." Titan Roundup- Titan men rebound for victory Northwestern Staff University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's soccer coach Toby Bares found out a lot about his team Sunday. And for the most part, Bares liked what he learned. After a tough loss to McAllister College on Saturday night, the Titans rebounded Sunday in adverse conditions to beat the University of St. Thomas 2-0 in St.
Paul, Minn. "To play on less than 24 hours of rest, in probably 90-degree heat, it was hard," Bares said. "It was trying conditions. The game started late because the refs didn't show up. I was very pleased we fought through and got the result." Pete Dillett scored an unassisted goal at the 44-minute mark to give the Titans (2-2) a 1-0 lead.
The game stayed that way until 78:35, when Matt Boehnen put in an unassisted goal to cap the scoring. Oshkosh outshot St. Thomas 16-8, while Wes Abrahamson made two saves in goal for the Titans. "When we had to fight hard, we pretty much did that," Bares said. "Guys didn't complain.
We just got out there and got it done." Bares cited the play of Dale Irwin, who came off the bench to play a strong game. WOMEN'S SOCCER Stout 4, Oshkosh Stout scored three goals in the second half to pull away from the Titans in Menominee. Shannon Camp scored in the first half to give Stout (1-3) a 1-0 lead. After a Tricia Sykes goal in the second half made it 2-0, an own goal by the Titans put Stout up 3-0. Alyssa Halverson, who also had an assist for Stout, capped the scoring with a goal at 81 :26.

Tigers 4, Red Sox 1 Not even Steve Avery's turn in Boston's rotation could end the Red Sox' slide, as Tony Clark hit a tie-breaking three-run homer to lift visiting Detroit to a win. The loss was Boston's eighth in its last 1 1 games, with two of the wins coming on days Avery has started. The Red Sox were 14-0 in games that Avery had gone at least five innings. Orioles 12, Angels 7 Rafael Palmeiro had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run as Baltimore squandered a six-run lead before beating visiting Anaheim to complete a three-game sweep. Despite the loss, the Angels maintained their one-game lead over Texas in the AL West.
Devil Rays 10, Rangers 5 Wade Boggs hit his fourth career grand slam and Tampa Bay again played the spoiler role, beating visiting Texas. Tampa Bay withstood home runs by Juan Gonzalez, Royce Clayton and Rusty Greer to win a series at home for the first time in nearly two months. Not when he was two strokes down with three holes to play. Not when his second shot on the par-5 18th hole went into the water, and Bob Friend's somehow stayed out. Not when he faced a 30-foot par putt to have a chance at a playoff.
Not when his approach on No. 18 in the playoff bounded off a cart path and came to rest against a purse, a virtually impossible place to try to hit the green. Still, when Andrade was only 5 feet away from victory, he snuck up behind Friend as he was lining up his last-chance chip and feigned pushing him into the water. The way the Canadian Open ended, that wouldn't have been all that unusual. "I don't think I ever do anything boring," Andrade said.
The final few holes at Glen Abbey on Sunday was anything but that. In a duel of bizarre bounces and heroic putts, Andrade beat Friend on the first playoff hole by purposely playing into a bunker and making a 5-foot par putt to win for the first time in seven years. "When you don't win for awhile, you don't know if you're ever going to win again," said Andrade, who finished at 13-under 275 and won $396,000. "But I had a funny feeling about this week." Andrade had a one-stroke lead over Friend going to the 508-yard closing hole, the same hole where Andrade hit into the water in the third round for a double bogey that cost him the lead. Friend, needing at least a birdie for a chance of a playoff, left his 3-wood short, but it somehow bounced over the bulkhead and skipped through the green into a back bunker.
Andrade, from 237 yards, also decided to go for the green but went in the water for the second straight day. He hit his fourth shot to 30 feet and started to think about how Dana Quigley, a fellow Rhode Island native, made a long putt to win on the Senior PGA Tour last week. Friend, who had blasted out of the bunker to 6 feet, holed the birdie putt to force the playoff. College football Florida State dropped out of the Top 10, and so did Notre Dame. Michigan and Arizona State, meanwhile, dropped completely out of The Associated Press' Top 25 college football poll.
Wisconsin moved up three spots to No. 14 after its 45-0 win over Ohio on Saturday. The Seminoles, beaten soundly by North Carolina State 24-7 on Saturday, tumbled from No. 2 to No. 1 1 in this week's AP poll the school's lowest ranking since it was No.

And then there's Michigan and Arizona State. The Wolverines, co-national champions, lost to Syracuse 38-26 and slipped out of the rankings from a No. 13 spot last week. The Sun Devils, 26-6 losers to Brigham Young, were No. 14 ranking last week.
Golf Annika Sorenstam won her fourth tournament of the year and substantially widened her money lead over Se Ri Pak on Sunday, shooting a 4-under-par 68 for a five-stroke victory over Patty Sheehan and Laura Davies at the Safeco Classic in Kent, Wash. The 27-year-old Swede, gearing up for this week's Solheim Cup, won $90,000, pushing her 1998 earnings to $896,188. Sorenstam, who also won the Michelob Light Classic, ShopRite LPGA Classic and JAL Big Apple Classic this year, had led Pak by a mere $6,000 entering the tournament. Sorenstam's win in the $600,000 tournament gave her 15 top-10 finishes in 18 events this year. Hugh Baiocchi's 5-under-par 67 Sunday gave him a two-stroke victory over Bruce Summerhays in the Senior PGA Tour's Comfort Classic at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis and a tournament-record 20-under 196 total.
Auto racing Bryan Herta's long wait for his first CART FedEx Series victory was often frustrating and sometimes painful. On Sunday, in the Texaco-Havoline 300 at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, the 28-year-old from New Albany, Ohio, came up with his first win in his 71st career start and gave Team Rahal, co-owned by teammate Bobby Rahal and late night talk show host David Let-terman, its first victory since Rahal won at Nazareth, on Oct. 4, 1992. Herta's best previous CART finishes were seconds at the 1995 Cleveland Grand Prix, the 1996 Marlboro 500 at Michigan Speedway and the 1996 race at Laguna Seca. les defeated San Diego. Bonilla's sacrifice fly off reliever Donne Wall (5-4) scored Trenidad Hubbard with the winning run. Hubbard led off the 10th with a walk and went to third on a single by Eric Karros. Giants 4, Rockies 3 Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer off long-time nemesis Chuck McEl-roy in the eighth inning, giving San Francisco a win over visiting Colorado. Marlins 6, Braves 5 Jesus Sanchez and visiting Florida kept Atlanta from celebrating its seventh consecutive division title as the Marlins scored four runs in the seventh off Odalis Perez and two runs with no hits in the eighth off Adam Butler.
Phillies 4, Pirates 1 Philadelphia starter Paul Byrd retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced and allowed three hits over seven innings to lead the Phillies. either on Saturday or Sunday. Mets 1, Expos Willie Blair and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout and Brian McRae threw out the potential tying run at the plate to end the game, giving New York a win at Montreal. With runners at first and second with two outs in the ninth, pinch-hitter Mike Hubbard lined a single to center off John Franco. McRae's one-hop throw to Todd Hundley, who started at catcher for the first time in nearly a year, got Shane Andrews at the plate as Franco earned his 36th save.
Diamondbacks 5, Reds Andy Benes' bid to pitch Arizona's first no-hitter was broken up with one out in the ninth inning on rookie Sean Casey's single, and the visiting Diamondbacks beat Cincinnati. Benes struck out six and walked five in 8'3 innings. It was the second time he had gone deep into a game Tal Associated Press With Mark McGwire already out of the game, St. Louis delayed the Astros' clinching party for another day. McGwire went 0-for-2 and left with minor back spasms after four innings Sunday night in the Cardinals' 3-2 come-from-behind win at Houston, which stopped the Astros' winning streak at eight.
McGwire, who hasn't homered in five games since getting No. 62 on Tuesday night, is l-for-14 since connecting off Steve Trachsel to break Roger Maris' mark. Chicago's Sammy Sosa homered twice Sunday against Milwaukee to tie McGwire for the record. McGwire grounded to shortstop in the first and fourth innings. St.
Louis said he left as a precautionary measure. Fernando Tatis, batting in McGwire's No. 3 spot, hit a two-run double off Doug Henry in the eighth inning as St. Louis rallied from a 2-1 deficit and prevented Houston from clmching its second straight NL Central title. Jeff Bagwell went 4-for-4 for the Astros, who would have clinched if the Cubs had lost to Milwaukee McDowell 21-35 6 5 5 1 Washburn L.5-3 32-3 4 4 4 2 1 PHarns 2-31102 1 Holtz 1-3 0 0 0 0 1 Watson 0 3 110 0 Deiucia 1 0 0 0 1 0 Baltimore Coppinger 5 5 4 4 3 4 Rhodes 1 2 2 2 2 2 11111 0 Orosco- 1 0 0 0 1 1 ABenitez 1-0 0 0 0 3 Washburn pitched to 3 batters in the 7th, Watson pitched to 3 batters in the 8th.

501 S. Main Oshkosh, Wl South Side of the Main St. Bridge Sosa FROM PAGE BI homers, but he has carried us. He is without a doubt the MVP of the National League." McGwire was 0-for-2 at Houston on Sunday night and he declined comment before the game. He and Sosa have homered 20 times on the same day this season, feeding off the competition to set the record.
"When it happened to Mark in St. Louis, I thought I want it to happen to me in Chicago," Sosa said. "I didn't want to lose that moment to all the people in Chica-go." Then Sosa had a message for McGwire: "Mark, you know I love you. It's been unbelievable. I wish you could be here with me today.
I know you are watching me and I know you have the same feeling for me as I have for you in my heart," he said. Sosa thumped on his heart. "That's for you, Mark," he added. Both of Sosa's homers cleared the back fence at Wrigley Field, sending fans scrambling for balls worth tens of thousands of dollars to memorabilia collectors. Sosa has 10 homers this year off Milwaukee, his most against any team.
"I'm not much of a sports fan," Plunk said. "That's cool that Maris' record was broken, but it's just one more than 61. That's all." After the first homer, a parade of fans raced after the ball as it went down the street. Sosa, meanwhile, SAVE $100! Low price. High Expectations.

By the time Sosa struck out in the seventh, the street was filled with fans.
When he hit in the ninth with the Cubs trailing 10-8, they were chanting "62! 62!" and Sosa didn't disappoint them. Home run ball No. 62 was caught by a man whose identity was not immediately known. Police officers surrounded him and took him to the closest station for his own protection. "We got him out of there because we thought he was going to get his behind kicked," Sgt.
Mary O'Toole said. The man's plans for the ball were not immediately known. The fan and groundskeeper in St. Louis who got McGwire's home run balls Nos. 61 and 62 gave them to the slugger, who gave them to the Hall of Fame.
The ball Sosa hit for No. 61 was retrieved by John Witt of Dixon, 111. who stuffed it in his pocket and promised to negotiate with him. Witt was sitting in a van off Ken-more Avenue outside the stadium, watching the game on a small TV when he saw Sosa swing. He got out of his van and the ball bounced a couple of times and landed at his feet.
"I didn't think I had a chance," he said. "It's an unbelievable feeling. How do you know how much it's worth?" Bergman L.12-6 72-3 5 3 3 2 7 OHenry 11-31 0 0 0 1 2:40 A 52.338 NL loaders BATTING LWalker, Colorado. 357, Olerud. New York.
